Vis-A-Vis: How Can I Get Involved?Vis-A-Vis offers volunteers two different environments in which they can tutor. Your role as a volunteer in the school is to provide a vital instructional service as a one-on-one tutor or classroom aide in the Champaign-Urbana schools.
Classroom Aide: Typical duties include leading some classroom activities, working with small groups of students, and helping children that have fallen behind the rest of the class. One-on-One tutor: Volunteers are placed in a local middle or high school where they help a student having difficulties in a specific subject or need help on a more general level. Many volunteers teach their students organizational skills and good study habits. Goals

"School plays a very important role in the lives of children. It is a place that supports their academic, social and emotional growth. They form relationships with friends and teachers and create memories that last a lifetime. Sadly not every child in our community gets the help they need to be happy, grow and be ready for life as an adult. Teachers work tirelessly to support these children but can't do it alone. Vis a Vis tutors provide invaluable assistance to children, not only helping them confidently learn how to read do math, but acting as friends and role models.
My name is Brandon Rutherford and Vis a Vis volunteers have been a part of my classroom since I first started teaching. Teachers like myself see Vis a Vis volunteers as invaluable resources and treat them as such, providing them with guidance and help as they learn how to be leaders. Each tutor I worked with has made a positive impact on the students they worked with and immensely enjoyed the experience. Furthermore they learned how interact with children, teach almost anything and act like a rock star to a room full of fans.
Becoming a Vis a Vis volunteer is a great move for pre-service teachers who are interested getting classroom experience or anyone else who is interested in learning leadership skills that can be used to enrich any resume.
Whether you are a teacher or a university student, I urge you to contact Vis a Vis coordinators today to learn you can be part of this amazing program."
